Week Six Prompt

While our horror books go out a lot during October, due to Halloween, the rest of the year our collection doesn’t get much attention. I think that the reason these books go out so well during that time is because of our central display. Our patrons are busy, so they gravitate toward the pre-selected books. This is true for the majority of the displays we have, so I thought that it would be nice to create a horror book display, even though we are several months away from the key time to read it. To keep it relevant, I would want to create several smaller displays that are related to current popular television shows. This would include multiple signs that say “Books to read if you like……” and include shows such as Stranger Things, The Walking Dead, Westworld, Black Mirror, Twin Peaks, Mr. Robot, etc. These are all popular shows that have a horror element to them, but they are enjoyable to watch during any season. That is what horror books can do, as well. These are all shows that tackle a variety of subjects, so if people don’t like zombies or aliens, then they can see that there is a whole range of horror books in our collection that they might enjoy. This project would take a short amount of time to put together, but I think our patrons would enjoy the tie-in to popular TV shows.

  1. Hi Jennifer.

Connecting library books to current hit television shows is a great idea. My library did a display on Star Wars novels, graphic novels, children books, and DVDs when Star Wars: The Force Awakens hit theatres. Every other day we were replacing items taken from the display with items from the stacks. The display really attracted patrons to the fact that the library has lots of Star Wars materials.

The only issue that we had is that even though there were signs encouraging patrons to checkout other Star Wars materials in the library they seemed overall to only want the items from the display. This could be because our hardcore Star Wars fans already know where the materials are at and the people checking out the display items are bandwagon fans who liked the movie. This is not necessarily a bad thing, because we still introduced a lot of library patrons to the fact that the library has Star Wars and science fantasy materials.

When we did a Dr. Who display it had a wonderful effect. It went over so well that several patrons gave the YA librarian and myself requests to order more Dr. Who materials. They wanted everything from novels to graphic novels to Dr. Who cookbooks. I drew and inked a picture of the Tardis and a Dalek from the television show and we placed it the Dr. Who display. During those few weeks I received many compliments and request for personal art work. I have discovered that Dr. Who fans are very dedicated.

    Thanks for posting.

    Robert

  2. I really like your books to read if you like idea. There are quite a few fandoms that have very strong followings that I think would provide a successful display like: Firefly, Criminal Minds, Game of Throwns, Supernatural, Downton Abbey and so much more.
